Check the exits. When you get to your room, take a few moments to check out the Fire Evacuation Plan in your room, and review possible escape routes. Walk down the corridor and find the fire exits. Remember, never use the elevator in a fire. The call buttons may take you to a floor filled with smoke or flames.
2. Check Room
It is important to know the layout of your room, because you may have to stay in it if smoke in the corridor cuts off your escape. Staying in your room can help protect you from smoke and gases while awaiting rescue. Put your room key close to where you sleep so you can find it easily. You will need it to regain entry to your room if smoke or fire blocks your exit.
3. Try Windows and/or
Try the windows and sliding doors. Do they open? How do the latches work? Which should you use in an emergency?
4. Look Outside
Look out the window to see what’s outside. Is escape possible? You may only be a few feet from the ground, and you can get out this way if the corridor is not usable. If you are on an upper floor, there may be a roof or deck within safe dropping distance. Dropping from more than two floors usually results in injury.
5. Carefully Grab Key
Make Haste Carefully
If a fire begins in your room, report it to the telephone operator. Leave your room and close the door behind you to keep the smoke and the flames out of the corridor. If there is any evidence of smoke in your room when you wake up, roll out of your bed and crawl to the door. Don’t stand! Smoke and deadly gases rise. Feel the door with the palm of your hand. If the door knob is hot, don’t open it. This means the fire is in the corridor. If the door is not hot, open it slowly, and be ready to slam it shut if necessary.
6. Survival Techniques
Open window and vent room if there is any smoke. If you are on the 3rd or 4th floor you may be able to drop to the ground safely. If you are up any higher you are better off staying put. Fill the tub with water. It might be needed for firefighting. Turn on the bathroom fan if it helps clear your room of smoke.
7. Run Water-Wet Towels
Wet towels and sheets. You’ll need them to put around the doors and cracks if smoke seeps in. Use your ice bucket to bail water.
8. Fresh Air
Get fresh air. Make a tent over your head with a blanket at a slightly opened window to get fresh air. If the windows do not open you may have to break one with a chair or drawer. Make sure there is no smoke or flames outside your window from a lower floor. If there is, do not open the window.
9. As a Last Resort!
If your room becomes untenable, you may be forced to leave through the best exit, but remember to keep low, and don’t panic. If you have an emergency plan adapt it as needed during the emergency.
